Preparing our Learners to become Future Leaders

St. Dominic’s Sixth Form provides a positive and seamless progression from the Senior School, treating pupils as young adults and preparing them for their future beyond the School. Our strong academic record in the Sixth Form emphasises a personalised approach to learning. We offer a multitude of A Level courses and provide a balance of traditional, academic and more practical subjects.

The Sixth Form Centre is a modern award winning building which provides a fantastic facility for study, research and recreation. Students are also welcome to make use of the Senior ICT Suite and Ipads, although many do prefer to bring their own laptop with access to Wifi and printers. In recognition of students growing maturity and independence, pupils abide by a ‘Business Dress’ code.

Enrichment programmes are also a key part of our Sixth Form education provision with many pupils excelling in Sport, Performing Arts and Music. Sixth Formers are encouraged to take part in activities such as Young Enterprise, Duke of Edinburgh, World Challenge and a variety of work experience.

Students are given full support to prepare for the future, including university and career advice, business networking and guidance from their tutor and personal mentor. There are support workshops dedicated to developing interview technique and mock panels. Academic achievement at A level is consistently high, with students predominantly gaining a place at their first choice of university.

Sixth Form Scholarships

For those who are academically minded, small class sizes, and high-quality, inspirational teaching are key to ensuring high grades, which will lead you to the university of your choice, and your future career. Understanding this need, combined with the awareness of the cost of independent education, we, at St Dominic’s, are now offering four Sixth Form Scholarship places from September 2024, for entry into Year 12.

These scholarship places will be open to internal and external candidates who achieve Grade 7 in 7 GCSEs. They must include this grade in the core subjects – Maths, Science, and an English GCSE.

Each application will attend an interview.

If there are more than four applicants, then an entrance exam will be held.

The successful applicants will receive a 50% scholarship, ensuring that fees start from £4,700 per year (2024-2025 fees).

Please do not apply until you have obtained your GCSE results, as the scholarship places as given based on these grades.

Admissions

Entry at Sixth form is dependent upon a student’s GCSE grades. A minimum of 8 GCSEs are required at grade 4 or above. A level 6 is required in the subject they wish to study at A Level. Parents and prospective candidates are encouraged to arrange a tour of our Sixth Form.

Academic scholarships may be awarded based on a pupil’s performance in their GCSEs. Scholarships are also available for pupils gifted or talented in Sports, Performing Arts or Art.

More Details

The admission process is as follows;

  • Registration Form and Fee – To register your child for entry into our Sixth Form, a £50.00 administration charge is payable.
  • Day visit – Pupils will also be invited to spend the day with us to experience their subject options.
  • Conditional Offer – A conditional offer will be made upon predicted GCSE grades.
  • Final Offer and Acceptance of a place – A firm, final offer will be made in August upon confirmation of grades. Paperwork will consist of completing an acceptance form and a £400.00 joining fee is applicable.
  • References – The Admissions Department will contact your child’s previous school for a reference.
  • Start date – first day arrangements will be sent beforehand via email.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are subjects taught at all ages throughout the School. A huge emphasis is placed on STEM subjects and both girls and boys are encouraged to develop their understanding of STEM through specialist teachers, who create inspirational and responsive learning environments.

STEM integrates the four subjects into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. Our pupils actively engage in STEM focused days and workshops as part of their learning. Pupils have the opportunity to gain hands on experience and partake in activities including: building go-karts, visiting high-tech IT establishments, entering STEM inter-school competitions and clubs which include the internationally recognized CREST awards. Other clubs enable learning in coding and robotics, stop-motion animation, green screen and much more. There is also an annual trip to view a live operation for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

STEM education creates critical thinkers thus enabling the next generation of innovators.

Sixth Form Subjects

In Sixth Form, students begin an independent learning programme. They have a study and library area with internet access and a bank of lap tops to enable them to use their study time productively. At Key Stage 5, subjects are offered in option blocks for the pupils to choose from. Each year, these subjects form five option blocks tailored to meet the students’ needs.

Entry requirements:

Minimum of Level 4s in at least 8 GCSEs, including English and Maths.

Preferably Level 6 or above in the options you wish to study at A Level.

(Level 5’s may be considered depending on option choices.)

Number of options: A minimum of 3 subjects should be chosen to study for 2 years at A Level. We also offer a further A Level to be studied in Year 12 to AS Level. Students are also encouraged to complete an EPQ (equivalent to an AS Level).

As with most aspects of our Sixth Form, the curriculum is bespoke and personalised to the individual. Students will receive full support and guidance when considering A Level choices from our expert team of Sixth Form Mentors.

Curriculum enrichment is continued into the sixth form with speakers, workshops and visits timetabled to broaden their experiences beyond their subject choices. The role of prefect is given to allow students to take on positions of responsibility and build skills towards their university applications.

Students are also given the opportunity to continue with skills such as: LAMDA, Duke of Edinburgh, choir, orchestra and public speaking.
